Creamer Ware Mugs with Frogs

circa 1785

These early Masonic mugs with the little porcelain frogs made inside of them are sometimes called emetic mugs.  See the ceramics section in the "Material Culture of the American Freemason" book published by the Museum of Our National Heritage in Lexington, Mass.  These mugs date to 1785 and were made in England.  You can imagine the surprise of most drinkers when they got down to the little porcelain frog sitting in the bottom of their cup!  It shows a sense of humor from 200 years ago!

A special "Thanks" from Brother Al Lohman, a 30 year collector and 30+ year Masonic Lodge member from Wisconsin.  Al trades on eBay under the User ID  "lochlohman"
