NEW ENGLAND ORDER OF PROTECTION

The New England Order of Protection was founded in 1887 in Massachusetts by members of the Knights and Ladies of Honor. The K&L of H apparently had a large Southern membership whose high mortality rate, likely due to a Yellow Fever epidemic, led to unbearably high assessments.  The NEOP served Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine.

Like many post-Depression fraternal benefit societies, the NEOP went through several mergers. In 1952 it absorbed the Ancient Order of United Workmen and in 1969 was itself merged into the Woodmen of the World.
