The Primrose League was an
organization of English conservatives inspired by Benjamin Disraeli, a
popular Tory Prime Minister, and founded shortly after his death in 1883.
The primrose was said to be his favorite flower. The principal founder was
Lord Randolph Churchill, father of Winston Churchill. Its motto was
Imperium et Libertas--Empire and Liberty.
The League enjoyed incredible
popularity achieving a membership approaching two million by 1910. But
following the World Wars, both the Empire and the League went into a lengthy
decline and the Primrose League was defunct by 2004.
