Early Liverpool
Transfer Mug circa 1800
This early transferware mug
depicts many Masonic symbols with the Latin Mottos: Sit Lux Et Lux Fuit
meaning Let there be light, and there was light
(Genesis 1:3); the strict translation from the Hebrew continues, "And
the Lord took care of the light, that it was useful, and He divided the light
from the darkness." Also Vide Aude & Tace is three
imperatives (commands): "Know, Dare, & Be Silent."
The pillars
of Boaz and Jachin are depicted along with the Holy Bible, Square and Compasses,
trowel, common gavel, plumb, level, mosaic pavement, beehive, the three lesser
lights and pyramids in the far background.
