Masonic Collectables
by George B. Spielman
This book is considered the Holy Grail to many
Masonic collectors! Its author, Brother George Spielman, is a long-time
collector of Masonic artifacts and with the assistance of other private
collectors George selected roughly 600 pieces that range in date from 1728 to
1940 to include in this beautiful coffee table edition. The book depicts
artifacts made in glass, china, porcelain, wood, metals, and other materials
that were made as commemorative pieces for the various Masonic bodies i.e. the
Blue Lodge, York Rite, Scottish Rite and the Shrine of North America.
Also, many items have been handcrafted by Masons for their own personal use
and display. Although it is not a complete reference of items, it will
make collectors aware of the vast history that is available in these art
forms. When I began my stewardship as curator of the Florida Masonic
Museum I spent many hours on the phone with George learning to identify the
different makers and sources of the artifacts pictured in his book. My
copy has become a working reference manual with penciled in remarks of what
what was in my own personal collection, when I got it, if I sold it and a wish
list of what I wanted next! I couldn't have built my personal Masonic
collection without it as it trained my eye to spot these artifacts as I went
to garage and yard sales, antique malls, trade shows and conventions. If
